A Green Farm Here at Kauffman Turkey farms, we like to think of ourselves as stewards of the land. That is, we must take care of the resources that we control to preserve them for future generations. This starts, strangely enough, with one of our end products, manure. We have been following a nutrient management plan for our litter for decades. Analysis of our litter reveals it is a soil nutrient resource, rich in nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. This is applied at the appropriate agronomic rate for crop production. Ground that has litter applied receives no additional fertilizer. Crops are rotated yearly as is appropriate to the soil types. All the corn we grow is used to feed the turkeys who's litter is used to fertilize the corn. Turkey ranges are on freshly harvested wheat fields ,which were no-till drilled into last years soybean field, which was no-till drilled into the previous years corn ground, which was planted after spring plowing of the turkey range ground. Mortalities are composted with the litter and spring applied to cropland. |
